Mikumi National Park landscape with wildlife and safari vehicle

3-Day Mikumi Safari from Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam → Mikumi National Park → Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

You're in Dar es Salaam. You've got three days. You want to see wildlife without flying to the Serengeti. Mikumi is your answer. It's 300 kilometers west of the city, a four-hour drive on a decent road. The park is open savannah, the Mkata Floodplain, with wildlife everywhere. This is the Southern Circuit. Fewer tourists than the north. Lower prices. And you're booking direct with the team that drives the truck.

Why Mikumi Works

Mikumi is the fourth-largest park in Tanzania. The Mkata Floodplain is the centerpiece — open grassland that draws wildlife year-round. You'll see elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and impalas. Lions are common, and leopards are present but harder to spot. The Hippo Pools are a highlight — dozens of hippos packed into a small waterhole, with crocodiles on the banks.

The Southern Circuit is different from the Northern Circuit. The Serengeti has 90% of the tourist traffic. Mikumi sees a fraction of that. You'll share the roads with fewer vehicles. The park is smaller and more accessible. You can cover most of it in two days of game driving. This is a private safari, so the vehicle is yours, the guide is yours, and the schedule is yours.

  • November to May: Green season. The landscape is lush and green. Fewer tourists, lower lodge rates. The roads can get muddy but remain passable.
  • January to February: Calving season. Many animals give birth during this time. Predators are active and visible.
