6-Day Migration Safari

Arusha → Tarangire → Serengeti → Ngorongoro → Arusha

This is the migration safari. You're here for the wildebeest. The endless columns of animals moving across the plains, the river crossings, the predators waiting in the grass. Six days gives you time to follow the herds. You stay in budget campsites, close to the action. The vehicle is yours. The guide tracks the migration movements daily. You go where the animals go. No middleman. No hidden fees.

Why this migration safari

The Great Migration is the largest movement of land mammals on Earth. Over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles move in a continuous circle through the Serengeti ecosystem. They follow the rains. They follow the grass. And the predators follow them.

This safari is designed for travelers who want to see the migration without the lodge prices. You sleep in tents, eat around the campfire, and spend your days on the plains. It's a budget way to see one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles. Your guide knows the migration patterns and adjusts the route daily to put you in the right place.

Tarangire elephants

Ramadhani picks you up in Arusha around 8 AM. The drive to Tarangire takes about two hours. You leave the city and pass through Maasai villages before the park gate appears.

Tarangire is elephant country. Herds of them gather around the river, the only permanent water source in the dry season. The baobab trees are ancient and massive. You spend the afternoon driving through the park, stopping for wildlife and photos.

By late afternoon, you set up camp near the park. Dinner is cooked over the fire. The sounds of the bush are different here — more hyena calls, more night birds.

Good to know 2-hour drive from Arusha. Lunch and dinner included. Overnight camping near Tarangire.
Serengeti National Park

Breakfast is early. You drive toward the Serengeti, passing through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The road climbs into the highlands, then drops into the plains. You enter through Naabi Hill Gate.

The Serengeti opens up. You can see for miles in every direction. The wildlife is immediate — zebras, wildebeest, gazelles. Your guide starts tracking the migration movements. The herds are constantly moving, and the guide adjusts the route based on current positions.

You set up camp inside the Serengeti. The night sounds here are different. Lions calling in the distance. Hyenas laughing. You're in the middle of it.

Good to know 4-hour drive to Serengeti. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight camping in the Serengeti.
Serengeti scattered landscape

You leave camp at first light. The migration herds are the priority. Your guide checks reports from other drivers and rangers to find the main groups. The wildebeest move in columns that stretch for kilometers.

If you're visiting during the crossing months (July to October), you head toward the Mara River. Thousands of wildebeest gather on the banks. They hesitate. They wait. And then they plunge. The crocodiles are waiting below. It's a moment you won't forget.

If you're visiting during calving season (January to February), you focus on the southern Serengeti. The newborns are everywhere, and the predators are close behind. You spend the day watching the cycle of life play out on the plains.

Good to know Full day of migration tracking. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight camping in the Serengeti.
Serengeti cheetah family

Another full day in the Serengeti. The migration moves constantly, so each day is different. Your guide picks a different area based on where the herds were last seen.

You stop for lunch in the bush. A thermos of coffee and a packed box. The wildlife carries on around you. A pride of lions resting under a tree. A cheetah scanning the horizon. Elephants moving through the grass.

The afternoon is spent exploring deeper into the plains. The light changes as the sun drops. By evening, you're back at camp, the fire lit, the stars emerging. The day feels longer than 24 hours.

Good to know Full day of game driving. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight camping in the Serengeti.
Ngorongoro Crater waters

Morning game drive in the Serengeti before you head out. It's your last chance to see the migration in the morning light. The predators are still active, the herds are still moving.

You drive back through the conservation area toward Ngorongoro. The views of the crater appear as you approach. You set up camp on the crater rim. The temperature drops at this altitude. The wind picks up. You wrap up warm and watch the sun go down over the caldera.

Good to know 3-hour drive from Serengeti. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight camping on the crater rim.
Ngorongoro Crater

You're up before sunrise. The descent road opens at 6:30. You're at the gate when it does. The crater floor is still misty as you drive down the steep road.

The crater is 260 square kilometers. The wildlife is everywhere — lions on the plains, elephants in the forest, hippos in the lakes, rhinos in the grasslands. It's the highest density of large mammals in Africa. You have the whole morning to explore.

Picnic lunch near the Hippo Pool. Windows down. The sounds of the crater all around. After a full morning, you climb back up and drive to Arusha. Three hours later, you're at your hotel or the airport.

Good to know 3-hour drive to Arusha. Breakfast and lunch included. Drop-off at hotel or airport.
Best time to see the migration

The migration moves throughout the year. Your guide tracks the herds and adjusts your route accordingly.

  • December to March. Calving season in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu. Thousands of wildebeest are born daily. Predators are everywhere.
  • April to June. The herds move north and west. The rutting season begins. The wildebeest mate and compete.
  • July to October. Dry season. The herds gather around the Mara River. River crossings are the highlight. This is peak migration season.
  • November. Short rains. The herds start moving south again. The cycle repeats.
