Serengeti camping safari with wildlife and safari vehicle

3-Day Group Camping Safari

Arusha → Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha, Tanzania

A short group safari for travelers who want to see the Serengeti and Ngorongoro without paying for lodge accommodation. You travel in a shared safari Land Cruiser with other guests and stay at public campsites. The route concentrates on two of Tanzania's strongest wildlife areas the vast Serengeti plains and the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater.

Why Choose a Group Camping Safari

Camping in the Serengeti is different from staying in a lodge. You're closer to the wild. At night, you hear the hyenas calling and the lions roaring in the distance. The public campsites are simple tents, sleeping bags, and a campfire. But that simplicity is what makes this safari memorable.

This is a group safari. You'll share the vehicle with other travelers. It's a good way to meet people and split the costs. The group size is capped at seven guests, so the vehicle never feels crowded. Your guide handles all the logistics cooking, cleaning, and finding the wildlife.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
After breakfast, leave Arusha and begin the drive toward Serengeti. The journey takes you through the Great Rift Valley and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area before you reach the Serengeti plains. The drive is long, but it is part of the safari. After entering Serengeti, your guide begins the first game drive. Overnight: Public campsite in Central Serengeti. Meals: Lunch & dinner.
After an early breakfast, leave camp with a packed lunch and spend most of the day inside Serengeti. The Central Serengeti area supports wildlife throughout the year. Possible sightings include lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas and many smaller animals. Overnight: Public campsite in Central Serengeti. Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner.
Wake up early and leave Serengeti after breakfast, driving toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Descend into Ngorongoro Crater for several hours on the crater floor looking for lions, elephants, buffaloes, hippos, zebras, wildebeest and, with luck, black rhino. After the crater game drive and lunch, begin the journey back toward Arusha. Safari ends in Arusha.
Best Time to Visit for Camping

Camping in the Serengeti is possible year-round. But the experience changes with the seasons.

  • June to October: Dry season. The nights are cold but the skies are clear. Wildlife is easier to spot. The campsites are busier because it's peak season.
  • November to May: Green season. The grass is tall, the landscape is green, and the campsites are quieter. Rain is possible, but it usually comes in short bursts. This is the best time for budget travelers.
  • January to February: Calving season. The wildebeest give birth in the southern Serengeti. Predators are active. The campsites in the south fill up quickly.
