Lake Manyara birds

After breakfast, you drive to Lake Manyara National Park. The park is narrow, hugging the base of the Rift Valley escarpment. The lake is alkaline, drawing flamingos and other waterbirds.

You spend the afternoon on a game drive. Look for elephants in the forest, giraffes on the plains, and the tree-climbing lions in the acacia branches. They don't always climb, but the guides know the spots where they usually are.

By evening, you check into your lodge in the Manyara or Ngorongoro Highlands. The views are dramatic — the escarpment rises behind you.

Good to know: 2-hour drive from Arusha. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight at a lodge in Manyara or Ngorongoro Highlands.
Ngorongoro highlands

Morning game drive in Lake Manyara. The light in the morning is different — softer, more golden. The animals are more active. You might see the flamingos taking off from the lake.

After lunch, you drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The drive takes about two hours. You climb into the highlands, and the air gets cooler. You check into your lodge on the crater rim.

The view from the terrace is the first thing you notice — the crater floor spreads out below you, 600 meters down. You can see the green of the grasslands and the glint of water from the lakes.

Good to know: 2-hour drive to Ngorongoro. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight at a lodge on the crater rim.
Ngorongoro shores with zebras

You're up before sunrise. The lodge packs a breakfast box because you want to be at the descent road by 6:30, right when they open the gate. The road into the crater is steep and winding, and the mist sits low over the floor as you come down.

The crater is 260 square kilometers. You have the whole day to cover it. The wildlife is everywhere — it's the highest density of large mammals in Africa. You'll see lions on the open plains, elephants in the forest, hippos in the lakes, and rhinos in the grasslands.

Picnic lunch happens near the Hippo Pool. You eat with the windows down, listening to the grunts and splashes. After a full day, you climb back up and return to the lodge.

Good to know: Full day crater exploration. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight at a lodge on the crater rim.
Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, you drive from Ngorongoro to the Serengeti. The route takes you through the conservation area. You enter the Serengeti through Naabi Hill Gate.

The Serengeti opens up. You can see for miles in every direction. The wildlife is immediate — zebras, wildebeest, gazelles. Your guide starts tracking the migration movements if the herds are in the area.

You spend the afternoon on the plains, driving toward your lodge. By the time you check into your Serengeti luxury camp, the sun is low and the colors shift from gold to orange.

Good to know: 3-hour drive to Serengeti. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight at a Serengeti luxury camp.
Serengeti lion family

You have the whole day in the Serengeti. The park is 14,750 square kilometers. It's bigger than some countries. Your guide knows where the predators are resting and where the herds are moving.

You do an early morning game drive, when the light is soft and the predators are still active. Then you stop for breakfast out in the bush, a thermos of coffee and a packed box. The afternoon is slower — you find a spot near a waterhole and watch the animals come and go.

The migration moves constantly. Your guide adjusts the route based on where the herds are. You never know what the day brings, and that's the point.

Another full day in the Serengeti. The park is different every day — the wildlife moves, the light changes, and the experience is never the same. Your guide will take you to remote areas for a different perspective.

This day can be arranged around sunrise and sunset photography if desired. The morning light is good for predators. The afternoon light is good for landscapes. You stop for a private picnic in the bush.

By evening, you return to camp. The day has been long and full. Dinner is served under the stars.

Serengeti giraffe

Final morning game drive in the Serengeti. One last chance to see the wildlife in the golden light. The predators are still active, the herds are still moving.

Return to the lodge for breakfast, pack up, and start the drive back to Arusha. The drive takes about six hours, with a stop for lunch along the way. Drop-off at your hotel or Kilimanjaro Airport.

Best Time to Visit Manyara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro

All three parks are open year-round. The wildlife moves with the seasons.

  • June to October: Dry season. The roads are dry, the skies are clear, and wildlife gathers around water sources. Peak season.
  • November to May: Green season. The landscape is lush and green. Fewer tourists, lower rates. The roads can get muddy but remain passable.
  • January to February: Calving season. The wildebeest give birth in the southern Serengeti. Predators follow the herds.
