7-Day Great Migration Safari: Following the Herds

Day 1: Arusha to Central Serengeti

Your migration safari begins with an early morning pick-up from your Arusha hotel. After a briefing, fly directly to the Serengeti (approximately 1.5 hours), saving valuable time to maximize wildlife viewing. Upon arrival, meet your guide and begin tracking the migration. Depending on the season, you might find the herds in the southern plains (Dec-Mar) or moving through central Serengeti (Apr-Jul). Enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush before continuing your search for the massive wildebeest herds. As the sun sets, proceed to Serengeti Migration Camp, strategically located near current migration hotspots. Fall asleep to the distant sounds of grunting wildebeest and hyena whoops.

Day 2-3: Following the Migration

Spend two full days immersed in the migration spectacle. Rise before dawn for the best wildlife viewing when predators are most active. Your expert guide will track the herds' movements, taking you to areas where the action is most intense. Witness columns of wildebeest stretching to the horizon, dramatic river crossings where crocodiles lie in wait, and the constant threat from lions, cheetahs, and hyenas. Between game drives, return to camp for meals and relaxation. Evenings feature sundowners overlooking the plains as you recount the day's incredible sightings. Overnight at Serengeti Migration Camp or similar mobile camp following the herds.

Day 4: Western Corridor River Crossings

Today focuses on the Western Corridor, where the Grumeti River presents one of the migration's most dramatic challenges. Witness thousands of wildebeest gathering at the riverbanks, mustering courage to cross while Nile crocodiles patrol the waters. The tension builds until the first animals plunge in, triggering a mass crossing that is one of nature's most awe-inspiring events. Picnic lunch at a scenic viewpoint overlooking the river. Later, drive to your new camp location near the action. Dinner and overnight at Grumeti River Camp or similar.

Day 5: Northern Serengeti & Mara River

Journey north toward the famous Mara River, where the most spectacular crossings occur (seasonal, typically July-October). The landscape changes to rolling hills and acacia woodlands as you follow the migration route. Spend the day exploring this rich wildlife area, with chances to see not only the migrating herds but also resident wildlife including elephants, giraffes, and numerous bird species. Overnight at Mara River Tented Camp, strategically located for optimal access to crossing points.

Day 6: Full Day Mara River Crossings

Dedicate today entirely to the Mara River spectacle. With your guide's expertise, position yourself at prime viewing spots where the herds are likely to cross. Watch as nervous wildebeest gather at the banks, then suddenly surge forward in a thundering mass, churning the water as crocodiles strike. The chaos, noise, and intensity create an unforgettable wildlife experience. Between crossings, enjoy game drives along the river. Return to Mara River Tented Camp for your final night in the wilderness.

Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater & Return to Arusha

After breakfast, depart for Ngorongoro Crater, descending into this natural amphitheater for a final game drive. The crater's abundant wildlife includes the Big Five and offers a contrast to the Serengeti plains. Enjoy a picnic lunch at the scenic Hippo Pool before ascending the crater walls. Drive back to Arusha, arriving in the late afternoon for drop-off at your hotel or the airport, filled with memories of Africa's greatest wildlife spectacle.
