7-Day Great Migration Safari

You have two full days to track the migration. Each day starts before sunrise — the predators are most active in the early morning, and the herds are on the move. Your guide listens to the radio reports from other guides and rangers to find the main groups.

The wildebeest move in columns that stretch for kilometers. You park at a distance and watch them pass. The sound is constant — grunting, hoofbeats, the occasional alarm call. You stop for breakfast in the bush, a thermos of coffee and a packed box.

The afternoon is slower. You find a spot near a waterhole or a river crossing point and wait. The herds might pass through, or they might not. The waiting is part of it. By evening, you return to camp. The fire is lit, the stars are emerging, and the day feels longer than 24 hours.

You move west toward the Grumeti River. This is where the migration faces its first major obstacle. The Grumeti is wide and deep, and it's full of crocodiles. The wildebeest gather on the banks, waiting for the right moment.

You find a spot on the riverbank and wait. The tension builds. The wildebeest are nervous. They approach the water, then retreat. Sometimes it takes hours. Then the lead animal plunges in, and the rest follow. The river churns with bodies. The crocodiles strike. It's chaotic and brutal and unforgettable.

You watch from a distance. When the crossing is over, the survivors regroup on the other side. You move on to your camp for the night — Grumeti River Camp, where you can still hear the river in the dark.

You drive north toward the Mara River. The landscape changes as you go — more hills, more acacia trees, more rocky outcrops. The herds are moving in the same direction, spreading out across the plains.

You stop for picnic lunch under a tree. The wildlife carries on around you. A pride of lions rests in the shade nearby. A herd of elephants moves through the grass. The afternoon is spent exploring the northern Serengeti, which has a different feel from the central plains.

By evening, you check into Mara River Tented Camp. The camp is close to the river, and you can hear the hippos grunting in the night.

You spend the whole day at the Mara River. This is the most famous crossing point of the entire migration. The river is wider than the Grumeti, and the crocodiles are larger. The wildebeest gather in huge numbers on the banks.

Your guide positions you at the best viewing spots. You watch the herds gather, hesitate, and cross. The scenes are dramatic — bodies plunging into the water, crocodiles striking, the survivors scrambling up the opposite bank. Between crossings, you explore the riverbanks and look for other wildlife.

By evening, you return to camp. The day has been long and intense. Dinner is served under the stars.

After breakfast, you drive toward Ngorongoro Crater. The drive takes about three hours. You descend into the crater for a final game drive.

The crater is different from the Serengeti — it's a collapsed volcano, 260 square kilometers of grassland, swamps, and lakes. The wildlife is concentrated here. You'll see lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, zebras, and rhinos. It's the highest density of large mammals in Africa.

Picnic lunch near the Hippo Pool. Windows down, listening to the sounds. After a full morning, you climb back up and drive to Arusha. Three hours later, you're at your hotel or the airport.
