9-Day Grand Expedition

Arusha → Lake Natron → Northern Serengeti → Central Serengeti → Ngorongoro → Arusha

This is not a standard Northern Circuit safari. The reason to book this package is variety and remote landscapes. Lake Natron gives travelers something very different from the usual safari route: an alkaline lake, flamingos, dramatic volcanic scenery and views toward Ol Doinyo Lengai. Then the itinerary moves into Northern and Central Serengeti before finishing at Ngorongoro. No middleman. No hidden fees.

Why this grand expedition

Most safaris stick to the classic Northern Circuit. This one goes further. Lake Natron is remote and volcanic. The flamingos gather in huge numbers. The landscape is otherworldly. Then you move into the Northern Serengeti, where the migration crosses the Mara River. You finish in Central Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.

This is a premium expedition. The lodges and camps are top-tier. The vehicle is private. Your guide is experienced in remote areas. You're not rushing from one park to another. You have time in each place to settle in. No middleman. No hidden fees.

Lake Manyara aerial

Hussein picks you up from your Arusha hotel early in the morning. The drive to Lake Natron takes about four hours. The road becomes increasingly remote as you approach the lake. The landscape changes from farmland to dry savannah to volcanic terrain.

You arrive at the lodge in the afternoon. The lake is visible in the distance — shimmering, alkaline, surrounded by volcanic hills. Depending on arrival time, you take a guided walk around the lake area. The flamingos gather in huge numbers, turning the shoreline pink. The view of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the "Mountain of God," dominates the horizon.

By evening, you check into your lodge. The air is dry and warm. The stars are bright.

Good to know 4-hour drive from Arusha. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight at Lake Natron lodge.
Lake Manyara birds

You spend the morning exploring Lake Natron. The early morning light is particularly valuable for photography. The flamingos are most active in the cooler hours. You take a guided walk along the lake edge, watching the birds take off and land in huge flocks.

The landscape is otherworldly — volcanic rock, alkaline crust, the distant peak of Ol Doinyo Lengai. It's a completely different experience from the Serengeti. Return to the lodge for lunch and spend the afternoon relaxing or exploring the local surroundings.

By evening, the colors shift across the lake. The sun sets behind the volcanic hills.

Good to know Full day of Lake Natron exploration. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight at Lake Natron lodge.
Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, you leave Lake Natron and travel toward Northern Serengeti. This is an important transfer day — the northern section is far from the main southern entry routes. The road takes you through remote countryside, past Maasai villages and open plains.

You arrive in the northern section and begin a short game drive if time allows. The landscape here is different from central Serengeti — more hills, more acacia trees, more rocky outcrops. You check into your luxury camp in the northern Serengeti.

Good to know 4-5 hour drive from Lake Natron. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight at Northern Serengeti luxury camp.
Serengeti hidden wildebeest

You spend a full day exploring Northern Serengeti. This area is particularly important during the migration months when wildebeest and zebra move toward the Mara River. Your guide listens to the radio reports from other guides and rangers to find the main groups.

If the herds are in the area, you focus on following their movements. River crossings should be treated as a possibility rather than a guaranteed event. Wildlife decides the timing, not the safari itinerary. The waiting is part of it.

If the migration has moved on, the resident wildlife is still abundant — lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalo. By evening, you return to camp.

Good to know Full day of game driving. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight at Northern Serengeti camp.
Scattered wildebeest

Continue exploring Northern Serengeti. The second day removes the pressure to see everything in one day. Your guide can concentrate on areas with good wildlife activity.

You stop for a picnic lunch in the bush. A thermos of coffee, sandwiches, the windows down. The wildlife carries on around you — zebras grazing nearby, birds calling from the acacia trees. The afternoon is spent exploring a different area of the northern plains.

By evening, you return to camp. The day feels longer than 24 hours.

Good to know Full day of game driving. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight at Northern Serengeti camp.
Serengeti scattered landscape

After breakfast, you travel south through the Serengeti. This becomes a game drive in itself, with opportunities to stop whenever wildlife appears. The landscape changes as you drive — from hilly northern terrain to the open plains of central Serengeti.

You stop for a packed lunch along the way. The wildlife is constant — zebras, wildebeest, gazelles, the occasional lion or hyena. By late afternoon, you reach Central Serengeti and check into your luxury camp.

Good to know 3-hour drive from Northern to Central Serengeti. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight at Central Serengeti luxury camp.
Serengeti lion family

You spend the entire day exploring Central Serengeti. The area has strong resident wildlife populations and is particularly good for predator viewing. The guide takes you to areas where lion prides are known to hunt.

Use the day to slow down and observe rather than simply collecting animal sightings. Find a spot near a waterhole and watch the animals come and go. A pride of lions resting under a tree. Elephants moving through the grass. The migration passes through if the timing is right.

By evening, you return to camp. Dinner is served under the stars.

Good to know Full day of game driving. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight at Central Serengeti camp.
Ngorongoro highlands

Morning game drive in the Serengeti before you head out. It's your last chance to see the wildlife in the morning light. The predators are still active, the herds are still moving.

After breakfast, you drive toward Ngorongoro. The road takes you through the conservation area. The views of the crater appear as you approach. You check into your lodge on the crater rim. The temperature drops at this altitude.

You sit on the terrace and watch the sun drop behind the crater wall. The evening is quiet.

Good to know 3-hour drive from Serengeti. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight at Ngorongoro luxury lodge.
Ngorongoro shores with zebras

You're up before sunrise. The lodge packs breakfast boxes and you're at the descent road by 6:30. The road is steep and the mist is still sitting on the crater floor.

You have the whole morning in the crater. It's 260 square kilometers of grassland, swamps, and lakes. The wildlife is concentrated here. You'll see lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, zebras, and wildebeest. The rhinos are there too — Ngorongoro is one of the best places in Africa to see the endangered black rhino.

Picnic lunch near the Hippo Pool. Windows down, listening to the sounds. After a full morning, you climb back up and drive to Arusha. Three hours later, you're at your hotel or the airport.

Good to know 3-hour drive back to Arusha. Breakfast and lunch included. Drop-off at hotel or airport.
Best time to visit the Northern Circuit

The Northern Circuit is accessible year-round. The dry season is the best time for wildlife viewing, but the green season has its own advantages.

  • June to October. Dry season. The roads are dry, the grass is shorter, and wildlife is easier to spot. The Great Migration is in the northern Serengeti.
  • November to May. Green season. The landscape is lush and green. Fewer tourists, lower rates. The calving season happens between January and February.
  • January to February. Calving season in the southern Serengeti. Predators are active and visible.
