Use this day to rest after your travel, review your gear, and hydrate. Optional: Light acclimatization walk in Moshi or nearby to start adjusting to altitude.
Drive 45 mins from Moshi to Machame Gate. Trek through rainforest to Machame Camp (~5-6 hrs, 11 km). Elevation: 1,800m to 3,000m. Maximize acclimatization: As you start at a lower altitude, take your time walking through the rainforest. Don't rush.
Ascend from rainforest to moorland (~4-5 hrs, 5 km). Elevation: 3,000m to 3,840m. Stunning views of the Shira Plateau. Add an acclimatization day: Since this is a relatively short trek, consider a rest or short walk at Shira Plateau after arriving to help with acclimatization.
Continue east to Lava Tower (~5-6 hrs, 10 km). Descend to Barranco Camp for acclimatization. Elevation: 3,840m to 3,950m via 4,600m. Acclimatization strategy: The day's route already helps with altitude gain and acclimatization. Emphasize slow, steady walking.
Traverse Barranco Wall, through Karanga Valley to Karanga Camp (~4-5 hrs, 5 km). Elevation: 3,950m to 3,995m. Rest & acclimate: The steep ascent of Barranco Wall can be challenging. Use this day to rest after reaching Karanga Camp.
Continue to Barafu Camp (~3-4 hrs, 4 km). Elevation: 3,995m to 4,673m. Pre-summit rest: After arriving at Barafu, rest well, hydrate, and prepare mentally and physically for summit night.
Midnight start for Uhuru Peak (~5-7 hrs hike). Watch sunrise from the roof of Africa. Descend to Mweka Camp (~5-6 hrs). Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m then down to 3,100m. Maximize success: Start early, maintain hydration and nutrition, pace yourself on scree and snow.
Descend to park gate (~3-4 hrs, 10 km). Receive summit certificates. Transfer back to Moshi hotel for celebration and rest. Additional recovery: Consider adding a rest day after descent, especially if feeling fatigued.
Transfer to airport for your onward journey (safari, Zanzibar, or home). Optional Zanzibar extension available.
