9-Day Photographer's Paradise

Arusha → Tarangire → Serengeti → Arusha

This is not simply a "see animals" safari. The objective is to give photographers time, positioning and good light. The route avoids unnecessary park changes and puts the most time into Serengeti. Early departures, late-afternoon drives, private vehicle access and camps positioned inside the ecosystem are more important than having the most expensive hotel. No middleman. No hidden fees.

Why this photography safari

Most safaris are designed for people who want to see animals. This one is designed for people who want to photograph them. The difference is subtle but important. You spend more time waiting. You leave earlier. You come back later. You position the vehicle for the light, not just for the view.

Nine days gives you time to work. Tarangire for elephants and baobabs. The Serengeti for predators, herds, and landscapes. Your guide is a photographer. He knows where the light falls. He knows where the animals will be. This is a private safari — the vehicle is yours, the schedule is yours, the images are yours.

Tarangire elephant

Ramadhani picks you up from your Arusha hotel around 7 AM. The drive to Tarangire takes about two hours. You enter the park and start photographing almost immediately.

Tarangire is known for elephants and baobabs. The elephants gather around the river, the only permanent water source during the dry season. The baobabs are ancient and massive. You spend the day working with the light — mid-morning is good for portraits, late afternoon is good for landscapes.

The guide avoids rushing between sightings. Photographers need time to wait for good compositions. By sunset, you check into your lodge near the park. The light is fading, and the images from the day are already on the cards.

Good to know 2-hour drive from Arusha. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight at Tarangire lodge.
Serengeti National Park

Early morning game drive in Tarangire before you leave. The light is soft and golden. The elephants are still at the river. You have a couple of hours to work before breakfast.

You drive toward the Serengeti, passing through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The landscape changes from acacia woodland to highland plains to open savannah. You enter the Serengeti through Naabi Hill Gate. The plains stretch out in every direction.

You spend the late afternoon looking for wildlife in good light. The golden hour is approaching. You check into your camp in Central Serengeti as the sun drops below the horizon.

Good to know 4-hour drive to Serengeti. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight at Central Serengeti camp.
Serengeti zebras

You leave camp before sunrise. The early hours produce silhouettes, mist, long shadows and warm light across the plains. The animals are most active in the first light — predators hunting, herds moving.

You continue the game drive through the morning. The light gets harsher around mid-morning, so you return to camp for lunch and a break. The middle of the day is for reviewing images and resting.

By late afternoon, you return to the field for golden-hour photography. The light is warm and directional. The wildlife is active again. You stay out until the sun drops below the horizon.

Good to know Sunrise and sunset drives. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight at Central Serengeti.
Serengeti lion family

This day is focused on predators. Lions, cheetahs and leopards are the main photographic targets. Your guide knows where the prides are based on the morning radio reports from other guides and rangers.

You spend the morning around areas known for predator activity. The private vehicle gives you more control over the pace of the day — you can wait for a lion to move, reposition for better light, or stay with a sighting as long as you want.

Return to camp during the warmer middle hours and go back out later. The late-afternoon light is good for predator portraits.

Good to know Full day focused on predators. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight at Central Serengeti.
Serengeti scattered landscape

This day is focused more heavily on the landscape. You photograph kopjes, grasslands, acacia trees, wildlife silhouettes and wide environmental compositions. The Serengeti is not just about animals — it's about the space they live in.

Your guide helps identify locations where wildlife and landscape can be combined in a single frame. A lion on a kopje. A giraffe against the sunset. A herd of zebras spread across the plains.

You spend the day exploring different areas, looking for compositions that tell the story of the Serengeti.

Good to know Full day focused on landscapes. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight at Central Serengeti.
Serengeti cheetah family

Return to general wildlife photography. Spend the day following the most interesting sightings available. If migration herds are in the area, concentrate on wildebeest and zebra. Otherwise, focus on resident wildlife and predator activity.

Your guide adjusts the route based on what's moving. You might spend the morning on the plains, the afternoon in the riverine forest. The flexibility of a private vehicle means you can change direction at any time.

By evening, you return to camp. The day has been full and varied.

Good to know Full day of general wildlife photography. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight at Central Serengeti.
Serengeti hidden wildebeest

You move into another section of the Serengeti. The purpose is to change the landscape and photographic opportunities rather than repeatedly driving the same roads.

Your guide takes you to a different area of the park. The landscape changes — more hills, more acacia trees, different wildlife concentrations. You spend the day exploring this new territory, looking for fresh compositions.

By evening, you check into your new camp. The night sounds are different here. The stars are the same.

Good to know Full day in a remote Serengeti area. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight at a different Serengeti camp.
Serengeti giraffe

This is the final major photography day. Use the photographer's preferred subjects from the previous days to decide where to go. Your guide can arrange an early start and late-afternoon return to maximize the best light.

You have a full day to work. The morning light is good for predators. The afternoon light is good for landscapes. You stop for a picnic lunch in the bush, windows down, watching the wildlife carry on around you.

By evening, you return to camp. The day has been long and full. The images are on the cards.

Good to know Final full day of photography. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Overnight at Serengeti camp.
Serengeti sleeping lion

One final sunrise drive. The light is soft and golden. The animals are still active. You have a couple of hours to work before breakfast.

Return to camp for breakfast, pack up, and start the drive back to Arusha. The drive takes about six hours, with a stop for lunch along the way. Drop-off at your hotel or Kilimanjaro Airport.

Good to know 6-hour drive to Arusha. Breakfast and lunch included. Drop-off at hotel or airport.
Best time for photography in Tanzania

The Serengeti and Tarangire are open year-round. The wildlife moves with the seasons, and each season offers different photographic opportunities.

  • June to October. Dry season. The skies are clear, the grass is short, and wildlife gathers around water sources. Dust, heat, and dramatic light. Great for landscape photography.
  • November to May. Green season. The landscape is lush and green. Dramatic skies with clouds. Fewer tourists, lower rates.
  • January to February. Calving season in the southern Serengeti. Newborn wildebeest and zebras. Predators are active and visible. Great for action photography.
